History
From the Neurological Institute to today's Department of Neurosurgery
The Neurological Institute of Thailand was founded by Professor Dr. Prasop Rattanakorn, a specialist in neurology and psychiatry, and officially opened on August 2, 1957, as the "Phya Thai Psychiatric Hospital" on a 5-acre site comprising an administration building, a 30-bed inpatient ward, and staff residences — built, in the founder's words, "to benefit patients suffering from nervous system disease for a long time to come."
Today the institute spans 16.8 acres across 13 buildings with more than 350 inpatient beds, serving as the country's tertiary referral, training, and research center for neurological disease. The Department of Neurosurgery has grown alongside it throughout this history — from the surgical facilities built during the 1960s expansion to today's role as a national referral center for complex neurosurgical cases.
